Former champions, Flyers Basketball have been eliminated from the 2016 division one Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association playoffs on Sunday at JSC. The number 2 seated team were edged out by the number 7 team Freetown Travelers 64-63, in what can only be described as the biggest upset in Antigua basketball history. Led by Teon Joseph’s 14 points and 6 assists and Morlon ‘Little’ Davis 12 points and 6 rebounds the Freetown team pulled off what most basketball fans and critics call a David and Goliath story leaving JSC in a state of shock and awe and Flyers out of the race.
Sharife ‘Souljah’ Sergeant had 23 points and 9 rebounds for Flyers. He was assisted by Keroi ‘Dragon’ Lee who had 14 points, 16 rebounds and 8 assists in a losing effort.
In the other playoff matchup, defending champions, F&G Trading Cuties Ovals Ojays advanced on to the second round after defeating Hometech Outlaws 71-56. Captain Bryan ‘Hollywood’ Matthew led his team to victory with 28 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals. He was assisted by Derricion Anthony with 11 points and 7 rebounds and Marlon ‘Buju’ Charles with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Outlaws’ Jason London had 15 points, 5 assists and 9 steals. Kevin Roberts chipped in with 13 points and 8 rebounds and Andrew ‘Puss’ Venture contributed with 12 points in a losing effort.
Freetown Travelers and F&G Trading Cuties Ovals Ojays will face in the semifinals the victors of the matches between Sanipro Northside Stingerz vs Yorks Crushers and H. U. F. Baldwin Braves vs Big Banana Express.
