Defending first division basketball champions F&G Cuties Ovals Ojays made light work of York Crushers despite the absence of captain Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew. Ovals beat Crushers 70-58 to improve to a perfect 10-0 record in quest for an unblemished season at the JSC Sports Complex over the weekend. Kareem “Mackerel” Edwards the high flying utility player was once again the team’s top scorer with 16 points and 9 rebounds. He received strong support from veteran guard Marlon “Buju” Charles who had 15 points, 8 steals, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Power forward Neville Martin chipped in with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Matthew, who was averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds for the season is expected to miss another three weeks of play following a leg injury in the team’s previous match. Ovals got off to another slow start and fell behind 8-12 at the end of the first quarter before finding form and bouncing back to outclass Crushers by nine in the second session. Following a close third quarter, Ovals again rallied to claim a ten-point advantage in the final 10 minutes. Decastro Walbrock and Jamie Harris had 13 points each for Crushers while Orlando Morris contributed 11 in a losing effort.
Flyers and Big Banana Express also claimed victories over the weekend in matches played at the JSC Sports Complex. Flyers beat Freetown Travelers 72-63 while Express edged out HUF Baldwin Braves 66-64. Sanipro Northside Stingerz also had a close 64-62 win over Hometech Systems Outlaws.
